How to Make a Skateboard Deck
Making a skateboard deck is the first step to creating your own board. However, some people also like learning how to make a skateboard deck as decoration for their rooms or stores! Whatever the reason may be, here are the steps to follow to make your deck:
Understand How Skateboard Are Made
Before learning how to make a skateboard deck, you have to understand what it’s made of.
A skateboard has three sections, which is the deck (the actual board), the trick (linking wheels to the deck), and the wheels. Typically, it has the dimensions of 81.3×20.3×1.3cm.
A deck isn’t just one piece of thick wood but made of at least eight thin layers of plywood and veneer. These wood pieces are then layered and glued together to be pressed and made into a deck. The typical total thickness of these wood pieces is around 10mm.
Standard skateboards use seven pieces of wood, while some boards can use up to nine pieces! Take note that if you do plan to change the number of pieces, it can affect certain factors. Changing the deck’s thickness or wooden pieces affects the deck’s weight, flexibility, and skating capabilities.
Next thing to consider is what design you want for your skateboard. And no, I’m not just talking about the overall aesthetic of your board, but how it looks and performs. There are actually different types of skateboard according to size, weight, and other aspects.
These aspects, including the design of your decks, trucks, and wheels, will affect the way you use the skateboard. For skateboard decks, it varies in the concavity angle, as well as its tail and nose shape.
You can get the right skateboard deck design online or based on the original skateboard you used before. Search and ask around to see which design works best for you to get the most out of your rides.
The next part on how to make a skateboard deck is to learn about the veneer. These veneers are broken down into three types of plywood, which is the face, un/sanded, cross-band plywood. You can adjust the arrangement according to how you want your skateboard to weigh and feel.
The typical arrangement of a skateboard deck is as follows:
- Center layer
- Center layer
- Center layer
You may want to add one or two more plywood pieces if you want more weight and feel to your skateboard deck. Core layers and faces are about 1.47mm thick, while cross-bands are 1.27mm. Once you have your veneers ready, it’s time to start the process of how to make a skateboard deck!
What Glue to Use
Once you have already bought and organized the veneers in the right order, it’s time to glue it together. There are many different types of glue to use, though the best one is tie bond. Using tie bond is actually a must in my opinion since no other glue can hold a skateboard as well than tie bond.
This is because tie bond glue is made specifically for making skateboard decks and similar projects. Before you begin the gluing process however, make sure that the sanded part of your face is on the concrete, with the un-sanded side facing up.
Apply the glue on all un-sanded sides, take the center layer and glue it to the face. Repeat the process until all pieces are glued together.
Press Your Boards
Once you already have your veneers ready and glued, it’s time to press it to further secure the pieces. When pressing it, have two pieces of cardboard that are three inches wider and longer than your deck. Place the frames on the sides, putting the centers between the cardboards and frame.
Prepare 20-16 inch nuts with bolts, 2-4 inch channel irons, and washers. Place the channel irons in the middle to press well. After this, let the deck mold for at least one day, checking it every two hours to ensure it’s still tight. You may need to suction out air once in a while.
Uncut and Cut
Remove the deck from the mold when it’s already cured, removing the cardboard while you’re at it. Once completed, make the skateboard designs!
You can use design cards or draw out your design on graphing paper. When you’ve already drawn the design, put it on top of your frame. Mark the points of your trucks and begin tapping and drawing to ready cutting it out.
When the design’s ready, cut the deck to create a shape. Use a bandsaw while doing this for accurate cuts. Once cut, use a router or rasp to curve out the board’s edges and you’re done!
Wrapping It Up
Making a skateboard deck doesn’t have to be so difficult with the right tools and materials. As long as you follow the steps correctly and have sturdy wood and glue, you can enjoy your deck. Once you’re done, it’s time to begin skateboarding and learning all the cool tricks!
